Abstract

There has been more encouragement for counselors to adopt a developmental perspective when working with adolescents (Neukrug, Barr, Hoffman, & Kaplan, 1993). Steinberg ( 1 9 9 3) conceptualized adolescent development as a passage from immaturity to maturity. This passage may be long, short, smooth or rough. Although it is commonly believed that adolescence is a rough passage, some students deal with this period with relative ease (Schave & Schave, cited in Vernon, 1993a).
