Abstract
The purpose of the study was to develop a list of criteria and a checklist from which to evaluate black biographies for self concept enhancement. The author hypothesized that such a checklist could be developed and used in evaluating black biographies. The checklist criteria were developed and used to evaluate forty black biographies, fifty percent of the biographies about blacks currently on the shelves of the McKinstry Junior High School media center. In using the checklist the author judged twenty percent of the books at borderline level for self-concept enhancement and seventeen percent unacceptable. The checklist seems to be a usable instrument with which to evaluate black biographies and as such may aid in reading guidance for self-concept enhancement.
