Abstract

The perception of what it means to be literate has long defined the type of reading instruction presented to children. Our society has valued the ability to read and write, although different eras have had emphasis placed on different aspects of these skills. As a result, we have followed different methodologies in teaching literacy thoughout [sic] our history (Shannon, 1989).
