Abstract
Considerable attention has recently been given to the record number of teachers who are choosing to leave the profession. In 1979, National Education Association President Willard H. McGuire stated that "a major new malady has afflicted the teaching profession and threatens to reach epidemic proportions if it isn't checked soon" (p. 5). He was referring to teacher burnout, which has stricken thousands of dedicated teachers and precipitated their desire to leave the teaching profession. One such teacher is former Iowa State Education Association President Ken Pfile, who in February, 1983, handed in his resignation after 16 years of teaching. Mr. Pfile cited a change of philosophy within the board of education and the administration as his major reason for leaving the teaching profession (Rogahn, 1983) He is just one of a growing number of teachers who have chosen to leave teaching because of job dissatisfaction.
