Abstract

It is well documented that in the United States today, in the midst of the richest nation in history, considerable poverty exists. The percentage of people classified as poor has been declining, but it stubbornly persists. The most recent estimates indicate that there are some 34 million or eighteen per cent of the United States population below the poverty line.
