Abstract
The goal of my MA project is the development of an instructional unit that meets the three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards, can be implemented into a high school physical science or chemistry classroom, effectively allows students to engage in science, and will be used to determine the impact on student understanding of and proficiency of HS-PS1-1 and HS-PS1-2 (NGSS Lead States, 2013e). The focus of this instructional unit will be on periodic trends and properties. The unit will be implemented through a unit split into two parts with the use of anchoring phenomena, storylines, multiple formative assessments, and ending with a project as a performance summative assessment to address the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS Lead States, 2013e).
