Abstract
The purpose of this project was to develop a way to prepare high school students to do inquiry labs in the chemistry classroom. This project built on the idea of using pre-lab questions to help scaffold student learning by helping students break down the major ideas of lab in a way that could be used as homework to save class time and prepare students to safely work in the chemistry lab. A pre-lab question checklist was developed based on research on common barriers for students to successfully complete inquiry-based labs. This checklist was then used to develop pre-lab questions for selected inquiry labs. The pre-lab questions were developed to help students design their own procedures for inquiry labs and to better help them relate the lab to the target content than when labs were given without using pre-lab questions.
