Enhancement of Weld Characteristics in DSS 2205 Using Cusp Magnetic Field-Assisted Gas Tungsten Arc Welding

Abstract
This work explores the role of an externally applied cusp magnetic field (CMF) in modifying the welding characteristics of duplex stainless-steel (DSS) 2205 during gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Four samarium cobalt magnets were used to generate the CMF effect along the welding arc. The impact of the generated CMF on the evolution of microstructural and metallurgical properties of DSS was analyzed using various characterization techniques. Mechanical properties of the welds were assessed through tensile testing and Vickers hardness measurements. The results indicate that CMF application significantly alters heat distribution during welding, enhancing the overall weld quality. CMF-assisted welds showed an average reduction of 4% in weld bead width compared to conventional welding, while temperatures measured 7.5 mm from the weld centerline were noticeably lower for the same heat input. The external CMF induced the stirring in the molten pool, promoting grain refinement and ferrite skeletal morphology in the weld. Microstructural examination revealed a more uniform distribution of austenite and ferrite, along with a transformation of columnar dendrites into equiaxed dendrites. CMF-assisted welding improved tensile strength by an average of 9% and increased hardness in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing weldability and performance of DSS 2205 for demanding industrial applications.
