Abstract
Teaching versus research or teaching and research. While articles still appear in the professional literature on the historical roots of the teaching versus research debate (e.g., Schachter, 1991), much of the discussion in higher education has moved to considering when and how teaching and research can be mutually effective and rewarding. For example, four distinguished faculty at Harvard (Riesman, Bell, Vendler, and Gould, 1987) provide their insights on how teaching and writing can be balanced during a faculty career. Sell (1995) suggests several cultural factors to consider in nourishing both teaching and research.
