Abstract
The demographic characteristics of college students have changed significantly on campuses across the nation (Astin, 1985). In contrast to homogeneous backgrounds and interests, we now find several student subcultures on most every campus (Altbach, 1993). While the student perspective regarding learning has continued as a strong theme in the literature (e.g., Gibbs, 1981a; Ramsden, 1992), student diversity in higher education has stimulated new research on the development of knowledge, skills, and values during the college years.
