Abstract
More stringent environmental regulations and production costs are typically the driving forces that cause businesses to re-evaluate the efficiency of their painting and coating operation. Ideally, the goal is to become more productive, more competitive and minimize regulatory burden. The Iowa Waste Reduction Center (IWRC) at the University of Northern Iowa has found that significant improvements in application efficiency may be readily achieved through education and training, particularly when these efforts focus on the spray operator. This paper addresses the topic of application efficiency, identifies common application efficiency problems encountered at painting and coating facilities, and presents examples of how efficiency can be improved.
