Abstract
The permanent mold casting of ductile iron in process automation, heat treatment, gating system design, and production of large castings is discussed. Heat treatment is necessary for regulating the reproducibility of the microstructure and attaining good machining properties of finished castings. Increasing the carbon equivalent (CE) in the cast ductile iron helps to reduce chill tendency and shrinkage-related defects. The quantity of graphite nodules and their diameter are increased due to graphitization during austenization.
