Abstract
The permanent mold process to cast ductile iron in terms of gating design, production of large castings, lined permanent mold (LPM) casting and empirical relationships is discussed. The LPM casting was used for short permanent mold life as permanent mold deterioration was a main factor in the casting of iron. Using LPM, energy cost was reduced as no heat treatment was necessary during iron casting were poured and in unlimited mold life. The LPM technique was used to make diverse industrial ductile iron parts such as diesel engine crank shafts and machine-tool spindles.
