Abstract

Shiqun Ou performed a graduate flute recital at six o’clock in the evening on Friday, March 15, 2019 in Davis Hall at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Collaborators on Mr. Ou’s recital include pianist Serena Hou, violinist Bethany Washington, violist Gabriel Forero, and cellist Haley Nicholson. The recital was presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Master of Music in flute performance. The program opened with Sonata No. 2 in D Minor, “La Vibray,” a French baroque piece for flute and keyboard by Michel Blavet, which was followed by Paul Taffanel’s Grande Fantaisie on themes from the Opera “Mignon” by Ambroise Thomas. Following intermission, the audience was treated to chamber music from the classical era with Mozart’s Flute Quartet No. 1 in D Major, KV 285, and then Broken Child composed Wissam Boustany. The program concluded with Pierre Sancan’s Sonatine for Flute and Piano. Mr. Ou’s graduate recital presented works spanning four centuries, from Blavet’s sonata published in 1732 to Boustany’s composition released in 2014, illustrating the breadth and virtuosity of the flute repertoire.
