Abstract
This extended work or orchestral song is set to a poem by Charles Cros titled “Nocturne” from his collection Le Coffret de Santal- Chansons perpetuélles.2 Of the original sixteen stanzas, Chausson sets only twelve. The poem is written from the viewpoint of a woman who, having been abandoned by her lover, decides to drown herself. The translation of the title is “Eternal Song,” suggesting the undying love of the female narrator whose love remains strong even in death.
