Abstract

Images of famous artworks are infused in today's mass media (e.g., advertising, television, the Internet). With it, an opportunity has arisen to teach high school students art history via the many art images already found in textbooks. This thesis explores a small corpus of infused images which served as the impetus for this thesis, namely the development of a curriculum that can be used as a stand-alone course or as individual lessons that could be integrated in various art classes as well as cross-curricular classes. The aim of the curriculum is to teach course content through art. The framework that leads to the curriculum explores the concepts of visual literacy as well as Visual Culture Arts Education. Through the developed curriculum, students focus on one famous art image at a time and explore the modern adaptations of that image in television programs, video and print advertising, music videos, etc. Students will investigate and analyze the social situation associated with the images and also form opinions, reflect, and then create digital artwork based on the original. The lesson plans incorporate the national visual arts standards as well as the 21 st century employability and technology skills as defined by the Iowa Department of Education. As with every new venture, there will be unforeseen obstacles. Some of the potential obstacles are examined. The appendices include detailed (yet open-ended) unit plans with clearly defined goals and objectives, cross-curricular ties, resources, suggested teaching strategies and learning opportunities, as well as sample handouts, examples of students' work, and evaluation tools.
