Abstract

This thesis attempts to describe the Psych-O-Generative Method of Teaching Foreign Languages and to analyze seven elements of the Psych-O-Generative Method of Teaching Foreign Languages. These seven elements are: 1. The Psych-O-Generative Transparency 2. The Psych-O-Generative Sequence 3. Grammar in the Psych-O-Generative Method 4. Expansion in the Psych-O-Generative Method 5. Correction Procedures in the Psych-O-Generative Method 6. Speed and the Psych-O-Generative Method 7. Unique Focus and the Psych-O-Generative Method The Psych-O-Generative Transparency consists of questions and appropriate answers printed on a clear sheet of plastic. Facsimiles of several Psych-O-Generative Transparencies are included in this thesis. The Psych-O-Generative Sequence consists of carefully designed small graded steps. The Sequence begins with the most basic sentence patterns and proceeds to more complex formations. Theoretical grammar is not taught in the Psych-O-Generative classroom. Psychological and linguistic reasons are given for the inductive process of learning grammar, the inductive process is employed by the Psych-O-Generative Method. The Psych-O-Generative process of learning grammar relies upon the formation of habits in the learning ii of a foreign language. Expansions of short, basic kernel sentences into more complicated structures plays an important role in the Psych-O-Generative Method of Teaching Foreign Languages. For the Psych-O-Generative teacher, the concept of kernel sentences is very important. By using a form of substitution in his questions, the Psych-O-Generative teacher may extract an expanded form of a kernel sentence from his students. The relationship between kernel sentences, immediate constituent analysis and word slots is explained. An explanation of the two types of correction procedures employed by the Psych-O-Generative Method is attempted. The Psych-O- Generative Method tends to rely on the innate abilities of students to correct themselves and each other when mistakes in the foreign language occur.
