Abstract
The works performed on this recital represent trumpet solo repertoire from the Baroque, Preclassical, and Contemporary periods. There is little information on the life of G. B. Viviani (b. Florence, 15 July, 1638; d. Pistoia, December, 1692 (?)). From approximately 1656 to 1660, he served as violinist at the Innsbruck court in Austria. His next known occupation was as Maestro da cappalla, again at Innsbruck, from 1672-1676. The assumption that he was, during these years, also active as a composer is evidenced by the fact that two of his operas were performed in Venice during the next year. His next important positions were as Maestro da cappella to the Prince of Bisignano (1686), followed by the same position at Pistoia Cathedral (1688- 1690). Viviani composed operas, arias, cantatas, vocal text books, and numerous instrumental works, in all of which the Italian lyrical style dominates. Sonata Prima per Trombetta Sola, a sonata for trumpet and organ (or harpsichord), comes from a collection of works, dated 1678, making up his Opus 4. There are only two trumpet sonatas in this collection (the only ones he composed), others being written for solo violin. These two sonatas fall into the category of sonata da chiesa (church music), the continua part being assigned to the organ.
