Abstract

Facing an increase in student behavioral concerns, educators are seeking ways to address as many students’ needs as possible in a way that is efficient and effective. Tier II behavioral interventions are one such way of meeting student needs. The current study utilizes a systems-level perspective to describe the use of Tier II behavioral interventions by school counselors within the state of Iowa. Responses to survey questions indicate that school counselors have a wide variety of interventions available to them, but are often burdened with the sole responsibility of creating intervention plans, training intervention facilitators, and monitoring intervention effectiveness and implementation fidelity. Methods for addressing these barriers to successful implementation are discussed, specifically the need to increase utilization of teaming within schools.
