Abstract

The composition is based on a twelve-tone row, and its derivative forms of retrograde, inversion, and retrograde inversion. These sequences of tones serve as a unifying factor through out the composition. The rhythmic texture has been so structured as to avoid metric patterns implying tonality. This has been achieved through the use of cross rhythms and avoidance of stress at regular time intervals. The composition makes use of motivic variation melodically, texturally, and arithmetically. Much use is made of counterpoint combined with linear and vertical orders, and purely vertical statements. There are two sections of approximately equal length. The first section is primarily contrapuntal, while the second section relies more heavily on chord-like textures. Near its conclusion the composition alludes to both these primary textures.
