Abstract

The National Hot Air Balloon Championships are held each year in Indianola, Iowa. It was several years ago that I first read about the "balloon races" in newspapers and knew that I wanted to attend the event. I don't know at what point my desire to go to the event became a desire to film it. Early in 1974 I decided that a film shot at this event would be the basis of my creative thesis for the Master of Arts degree in the Department of Speech at the University of Northern Iowa. The film was never thought of as a documentary except in the most lyrical sense. From the beginning it was seen as a sound film with a musical soundtrack, which, it was hoped, would be an original composition. The events of the balloon championships are held on the campus of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. August 3, 1974.
