Abstract

Art critic Donald Kuspit proposes for the future an art which is symbolic spiritual art, a communicative extension of silent painting, it must dramatize (respiritualize, revitalize) the forms it uses to make them spiritually convincing. It does this by fusing their eternal character with a worldly content that is shown to have mystical import, inner meaning. This interaction and reconciliation generates spiritual atmosphere. (Kuspit 319)

His proposal describes the direction of my work in the series of prints, Voices Unspoken and Unheard, images of a society dehumanized through pain and isolation. The stimulus for making this work originates in what touches me deeply, from themes generated by the mass media to specific painful experiences related by people I have known. The emotions and experiences collect in my mind to form a narrative for the work, one that is important in the generation of the work, but is not always fully evident to the viewer. The development of these works has been a search for the most effective and aesthetic visual form to convey the content or meaning of each work to the viewer.
