Abstract

To explore the characteristics of home or hand machine knitting in this country , two survey s were conducted. The first examined home or hand machine knitters' instructional needs, yarn and machine brand preferences, and employment characteristics; the second explored availability of machine knitting instruction at educational institutions. The first survey was included in two machine knitting magazines and distributed by a mail order retailer; 579 knitters from 47 states and the District of Columbia responded. The second survey was sent to 341 post-secondary schools offering degrees related to clothing a nd textiles; 146 schools (42.8%) responded. The survey of machine knitters revealed machine knitters were p r ima rily self taught, although dealer lessons were also important. The ne ed f or more instruction was stated by 80.2% of the respondents; 88 . 8% were willing to attend classes offered in their geographic area. Quality was most influential in the choice of yarns and machines. The most popular machine was the Brother 930, a computerized model. Fourteen schools (9.6%) offered machine knitting as part of their programs, three schools plan to add it within two years. Both the schools and students were satisfied with the inclusion of machine knitting. El even (73.3%) of the schools already offering machine knitting planned to expand their programs. The primary reason for not including machine knitting was budgetary restrictions. Inappropriate ness to program was also influential. If machines were supplied free of charge by manufacturers, 63 (47.7 %) of the schools responding would consider adding machine knitting to their programs.
