Abstract
The primary intention of my studio thesis, as a graduate student in graphic design in the UNI Department of Art, is an intensive study of the design of publications. This study involves the use of computers, computer software, and related technology in my approach to researching, planning, and executing each project presented in my studio thesis . My first experience in publication design was while completing my studies toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I became directly responsible for the entire design and production of Theatre Topics, a new academic journal housed and edited at UNI and published twice a year by The Johns Hopkins University Press. Even though I had virtually no experience with computers until my senior year, I used a Macintosh SE and Aldus PageMaker software to create the cover and interior format of Theatre Topics, in addition to the letterhead, envelope, and business card. A traditional style, which reflects classical aesthetics, involving symmetry, linearity, and simplicity was an appropriate choice. I concluded that more variety would be distracting in an academic journal in which the text is the most important element on the page. Through my graduate assistantship, I have continued to work directly with the editor of Theatre Topics on all aspects of that journal's operation, including establishing and managing a filing system; correspondence; typesetting; publishing and printing.
