Abstract

My visual thesis, titled "Sojourn," is made up of 12 paintings, plus four preparatory drawings and color studies. Collectively, these works are an ongoing narrative commentary on vagaries of the human condition as I have observed them during the past 35 or so years of my adult life. While each of the paintings can be viewed separately, they were intended from the start to be shown together, as I believe the similarities in their subject matter and overall composition have a synergistic effect when viewed as a group. All of the paintings were done in acrylic paints on stretched canvas. I chose acrylic paint because I am quite familiar with its properties, which left me free to focus on how I wanted the paintings to look. Each of the 12 paintings has as the focal point a single human figure, typically located near the vertical center of the canvas for visual balance. These figures include both genders, and several different ethnic groups, to emphasize the universality of the intellectual commentary contained in these works.
