Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to make a preliminary biochemical study of the inhibition by an extract of the nematode Cephalobus and to test the inhibitive effect of the extract on the growth of Staphylococcus pyogenes var. aureus . Emphasis was placed upon the con - centration of inhibition-producing precipitates and correlating them with growth of S. aureus. Also investigated was the molting phenomenon of nematodes and its relation to inhibition-producing precipitates . Precipitates from ethanol extraction of the nematode of various days growth were tested for inhibition of S. aureus. Nematode-ethanol- precipitates which were eight , fifteen, twenty-one, and twenty- two days old produced significant inhibition of S. aureus growth. Various concentrations of the precipitates showed a linear increase in inhibition of S. aureus . Microscopic observations of the nematodes show that those of eight, fifteen, and twenty days of growth have the greatest fraction of molting nematodes. Maximum molting was correlated with maximum inhibition.
