Abstract

Vicky likes girls, but to her father, that means she’s going to hell. He sends Vicky away to a correctional institute, and insists that her younger sister, Charlotte, go as well, to keep them both out of trouble. There, Vicky is assigned an eager-to-please roommate, Helen, who’s lived at the school since kindergarten. Helen has a pet, sort of: a black cat named Luna, uncatchable and unusually intelligent, who has roamed the halls of the school for as long as Helen’s been attending. Luna takes an interest in Vicky, pawing and nipping at her shins, as if trying to lead her somewhere. Meanwhile, Vicky has taken an interest in Helen, but can’t believe her feelings could ever be returned.

One night, Luna catches Vicky’s sleeve in her teeth and convinces a reluctant Vicky to follow. Luna leads her into the forbidden basement of the school, where Vicky finds a mysterious journal hidden within the stacks of cobwebbed books. The journal contains the story of a magical otherworld full of witches and spells, and written on the inside cover is the name of Vicky’s grandmother. Helen finds the journal, and Vicky fears her new friend will reject her as a witch, but instead Helen suggests they complete one of the spells inside, just for fun. Vicky, hoping Helen will keep the book a secret, agrees. On the night of a full moon, Vicky and Helen set up the ritual circle, and at the stroke of midnight, Vicky chants the spell. Nothing happens, until Luna steps into the circle.

Vicky opens her eyes to find herself in the middle of an unfamiliar forest, where an old woman stands over her holding a knife dripping with blood. Two figures in dark cloaks prevent Vicky from fleeing. The ritual worked and Vicky has materialized in the Sisterlands, summoned by Briar Whitmore, Head Witch of the Lunar Circle, and her two most trusted confidants, Tamara and Rena. Witches are losing their magic, and they need Vicky’s help to save them from the cruel Witch Hunters who threaten their world. The witches promise to protect Vicky, only to be attacked by Witch Hunters before they can reach the safety of the Lunar Circle. In an act of self-defense, Vicky accidentally uses magic to escape the hunters.

Once inside the Lunar Circle, Whitmore tells Vicky she can either help the witches or die, and Vicky takes an oath to help. Vicky is assigned a Guide to the Goddess, Rena, whom she hates, but Rena trains Vicky to master her magic.
