Stuttering--Psychological aspects;

Abstract

One purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between locus of control and stuttering severity among adult stutterers. A second purpose was to determine if locus of controI orientation was different for stutterers compared to their nonstuttering peers. Six teen stutterers and sixteen nonstutterers from across the United States participated. They were matched according to age, sex, and educational level. The two groups of subjects completed two locus of control scales: The Rotter Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (Rotter, 1966) and the Locus of Control of Behaviour Scale (LCB : Craig, Franklin, & Andrews, 1984) . The stuttering subjects also completed three stuttering severity measures: an equal Interval scale of stuttering severity, the Perceptions of Stuttering Inventory (PSI: Woolf, 1967) and the Stutterer's Self-Rating of Reactions to Speech Situations (SSR: Johnson, Darley, & Spriestersbach, 1963). Pearson product-moment correlations were calculated among the stuttering severity measures an d locus of control measures. The components of the PSI and SSR were found to be significantly correlated with the stutterer's self-rating on the equal interval scale, with significant correlations between the self-rating and the struggle and avoidance components of the PSI and the avoidance and severity components of the SSR.
