Abstract

The problem was the creation of ceramic sculpture. This was an area I had not explored very much. When I did explore the sculptural range of clay it was difficult to express myself. Slab construction was the first method of exploration into clay sculpture. With this method I could not acquire the shapes necessary in my sculptures. But this slab construction lead me into casting of objects. Airplane models were the final objects to be cast. Slabs of clay were pressed into these airplane casts. These airplane shapes were then assembled and fired in a kiln. To complete the sculpture other materials were added. From the development of the airplane sculptures I found a style of working. I acquired the ability to overcome the technical properties of clay and to preconceive finished sculptures. And I developed a sensitivity towards combining cloth, plastic, metal and wood with clay.
