Abstract

The preparation of a 4-cyanopyridine complex of chromium(III) chloride by two methods is described. The first method involved the mixing of 1-butanol solutions of 4-cyanopyridine and chrornium (III) chloride 6-hydrate at so0 c and the second involved the addition of chromium(III) chloride 6-hydrate to molten 4-cyanopyridine. The complex has been determined by elemental analysis and conductivity measurements as dichloroaquotris (4-cyanopyridine)chromium(III) chloride, [CrCl2(H20)(C6H4N2)3JCl. The compound was studied using infrared spectroscopy in the wavelength range 4000-700 cm-1 , with the bonding site on the 4-cyanopyridine indicated as nitrogen of the pyridine ring but not nitrogen of the nitrile group. Additional 4-cyanopyridine complexes of chromium(III) have been prepared by refluxing a mixture of anhydrous chromium(III) chloride, 4-cyanopyridine , and 1-butanol but have not been characterized.
