Abstract

The Place My Words Are Looking For and Other Stories is a collection of short fiction and excerpts from a novel. Each piece was written within the past two years, reflecting my work in the graduate program. The issues of identity and gender unify all the elements of this thesis. The first three pieces are short stories that explore a variety of themes. "Fish Story" is told from the perspective of a young woman recalling something that happened to her when she was six years old. Through her memory, the story explores what it means to be biracial, a mother-daughter relationship, and other issues. "The Wilkes Girls" explores some of the issues of biracial women. But unlike "Fish Story," this story also focuses on issues of extreme violence, identity, and justice. In "Stigmata" three black women struggle to relate to each other. The last three pieces, "Katie," "The Funeral," and "The Place My Words Are Looking For" are excerpts from a novel in progress. Each of these pieces deals with various aspects of identity, especially gender, race and family.
