Abstract

This research is a case study of a former IV drug user, male, aged 37, who was diagnosed with AIDS two years previous to the beginning of the study. The subject and five individuals from his family and close circle were interviewed to investigate, assess, and evaluate how the experience of contracting AIDS had impacted his physical, social, emotional, sexual, and spiritual health. Open-ended interviews covering the five dimensions of health were conducted, and a 10-point Likert scale was employed from a before-and-after AIDS perspective. Results of analysis of statistical data showed a significant decrease (< .0005) in physical health of the subject and a significant increase (< .005) in his spiritual health. Sexual health was reported to have the greatest standard deviation. Qualitative analysis of the interview data indicated the subject had experienced growth in the social and emotional dimensions of health, but this was not confirmed by analysis of statistical data.
