Abstract
Despite the fact that there has developed an increased awareness of the need for organized guidance in Iowa, far too little has been done about obtaining a comprehensive picture of the status of guidance in the public schools. Information I received from the State Supervisor of Guidance Education Department of Public Instruction, indicated that no comprehensive guidance study of a representative nature had ever been conducted in the public high schools of Iowa. The writer contends that this paucity of information about guidance in Iowa's public high schools constitutes a very serious impediment to the improvement of guidance. If Iowa is to improve its guidance services and practices among its public high schools, such an improvement program should logically begin with a comprehensive examination of the present conditions of guidance. It could be unfortunate to launch a statewide guidance improvement program which was based upon mere surmise concerning the present condition so Statewide studies of the status of guidance should be conducted at all levels of education. This investigation was limited to an examination of the status of guidance in 173 public high schools in Iowa.
