Abstract
Mozart's violin sonatas demonstrate the evolution from the customary eighteenth century style of keyboard sonata with violin accompaniment to the nineteenth century sonata in which both instruments are equal partners. Of his later sonatas, K454(1784), K481(1785) and K526(1787) are perhaps his masterpieces. The perfection of balance between the instruments, the expanded form, the technical brilliance and expressive richness of these compositions set the standard for the modern sonata. The Sonata in B flat, K454, was written for the Italian violinist, Regina Strinasacchi. The first performance took place in Vienna in 1784 in the presence of Emperor Joseph II. The first movement begins with a slow, majestic prelude which outgrows the proportions of a typical introduction. Aggressive chordal statements alternate with gentle melodic elements and lead to an Allegro in sonata form. The heart of the work is its second movement, an Andante in E flat. Based on three themes, it evokes an atmosphere of great melancholy and passionate longing. The third movement, an Allegretto in rondo form, is a delicate but jubilant dialogue between the violin and piano which culminates in a brilliant coda. Dvorak's Romance inf minor, written for violin and orchestra in 1873, has a distinctly nationalistic flavor. The effect is that of a tone poem in which simple, lyrical melodies combine with rhapsodic passages to convey the atmosphere of the Bohemian countryside.
