Abstract

In this show I have included some of the prints that I have made during my time as a graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa. I believe that these prints show development and transition in style and sensibility. As I have worked, I have tried to continually develop my art. With every print there is an attempt to go beyond the barriers of the previous one. Working intuitively, I try not to have any preconceived notions of what the final piece is going to look like. Every step in the process is valuable; I don't always necessarily know when the prints are in their final stage. The two main mediums that I work in are monoprinting and intaglio, both of these lend themselves very much to my spontaneous and process oriented work. The monoprints are very exciting to work with. Although, I didn't start out with any preconceived notions of how the final pieces would tum out, I have sometimes given myself guidelines to get myself started on a work. Often I would start out with a tight and restrictive image. Working spontaneously, I would then attempt to strip that image down and cover it up, destroying it or casting it into some sort of background. Another guideline that I sometimes use in the diptychs and triptychs is consistent color throughout each print. I would not use the same amount of each color, rather if I used a color in one print, that same color had to be found somewhere in the other prints as well. This allows for irregular continuity, whether or not one frame had anything to do with the next in shape or line, they all had at least minimal common ground in color.
