Abstract
This recital was performed on March 30, 1993 and consisted of two arias and three sets of music. The following is an abstract of the music in the order of the program. 1 "Piangero la sorte mia" is a da capo aria which occurs in the third act of Giulio Cesare by Handel. With her troops defeated, herself captured and thrown into chains by her gloating enemy Tolomeo, and her lover reported dead, Cleopatra sings a lament. There is no one to help her and she bewails her fate, adding that her ghost will haunt Tolomeo. Handel chooses a major key--E major, associated with Cleopatra--and a melody and accompaniment which are beautifully simple to express her sorrow. The varied rising intervals--a third, a fourth, a fifth, and an octave--lead with artistic simplicity to the cadence at the end of the A section. The B section, in which Cleopatra promises to haunt Tolomeo beyond the grave, brings a change to 4/4 meter from 3/8 meter, a much denser texture, a faster tempo, and a change of key to c-sharp minor. 1 Its dramatic coloratura makes more poignant the return to the pathos of the da capo. The judicious choice of ornaments and vocal color changes for the da capo express the dramatic depth of Cleopatra's lament and help to prevent the possible dramatic superficiality for which the da capo aria has been criticized. This aria is among Handel's finest and most beautiful.
