Abstract
This thesis is an annotated listing of music books for the high school library. In conducting this study, use was made of the music collections of four major universities in the Midwest. Chapter 3, the report of the findings of this study, contains three parts. The first part consists of the division of music books into fourteen categories. The areas presented are: General reference sources, Aesthetics, Music Appreciation, Orchestral Music, History of Music, History of Instruments, Musicology, Biography, Music Theory, Applied Music, Form and Analysis, Conducting, Music Education as a Profession, and Miscellaneous-Opera. Within each of these categories, the music books are listed by preference and value to the high school library. The most highly recommended books are indicated by "###." Part Two of Chapter 3 is a composite listing of the fourteen elemental categories. It attempts to show order of preference for purchasing all of the books. The most important book reviewed was found to be the Harvard Dictionary of Music, and the least important was a paperback book concerned with baton twirling. The last part of Chapter 3 is an "Interim Listing of Music Paperback Titles." It is a musical bibliography comparable to commercially available bibliographies that claim to supplant general encyclopedias. The list published in this thesis contains twenty books and costs less than fifty dollars. If purchased they may be adequate to motivate a student to pursue music as a career or as a more active pastime. It is thought by the writer that this bibliography should be revised every two years.
