Abstract
The Prelude BWV 999 exists as a copy written down by a friend of Bach, Johann Peter Kellner. The title is "Praelude in C Mol/pour la lute/di Johann Sebastian Bach." The transposition to D minor from the original C minor for lute matches the requirements of the modern classical guitar. The Prelude is forty-three measures long. A one-measure rhythmic pattern is consistently used through the piece. After establishing D minor in the first seven measures, the work proceeds toward the key of A through a sixteen-measure pedal point on the dominant E from measure 1 7 through measure 32. This portion is comprised of E dominant seventh, A minor, and secondary diminished seventh chords of E. An A pedal point begins at measure 33 until the cadence in A Major at measure 43.
