Abstract

Black Hawk County is a 576 square mile political subdivision located in the northeast quadrant of Iowa in the physiographic region known as the Iowan Surface. The purpose of this study was to determine the status of natural areas within the county. Four aspects were investigated: (i) the amount and qualitative condition of the woodland (ii) the identification, verification and qualitative assessment of specific natural communities with emphasis on prairies, wetlands and forests; (iii) the identification and verification of threatened and endangered species as reported in Endangered Io;.va Vertebrates (Roosa, 1977) and Endangered and Threatened Iowa Vascular Plants (Roosa and Eilers, 1978); (iv) the identification of relict species. Classification systems for woodlands and for natural communities were developed based on the techniques of the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (White, 1978). Potential natural areas were verified by on-site visitation. Map: of the results have been drawn for each township and included in this report at a scale of 1 inch= 4224 feet. Interpretation of soils information from the Black Hawk County So: Survey, 1978 indicated that at the time of settlement the county was 72.7 percent prairie, 18.3 percent wet prairie, less than 0.1 percent marsh, 4.9 percent floodplain forest, 1.1 percent upland forest and 2. percent savanna.
