Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of Proposition 48 student athletes competing in football in the Gateway Football Conference. In conjunction with this, the total number of Proposition 48 student athletes at each institution since its implementation was determined. Individual data concerning most often failed requirement, college grade point average, and progression towards a degree were also extracted. Finally, opinions of the head football coaches in the conference concerning Proposition 48 were revealed. Subjects for this study included any Proposition 48 football player entering any of the seven conference schools between the Fall of 1986 and the Fall of 1991. Proposition 48 status was determined by researcher examination of eligibility reports obtained from the Commissioner of the conference. It was determined that a total of 71 Proposition 48 football players entered conference schools between 1986 and 1991. On average, the conference schools brought in 11 Proposition 48 student athletes per year. The test score component of Proposition 48 was the most often failed requirement. Mean college grade point average for these student athletes was 2.2 on a 4.0 scale and approximately one-third of these student athletes completed eight semesters of course work. Concerning the opinions of the seven head football coaches, it was revealed that they were equally divided on the issue of the appropriateness of Proposition 48 and that they unanimously disagreed with the recent increase in the requirements.
