Abstract
To date, there has not been a well-developed measure designed specifically to evaluate the content of worry. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a worry questionnaire designed to measure the worry content of college students, the College Student Worry Questionnaire (CSWQ). A total of 315 participants were recruited from several undergraduate psychology courses at a large mid-western university. Participants completed a questionnaire packet which consisted of a written informed consent form, a background questionnaire, the CSWQ, the Satisfaction With Life Scale, the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Specifically, the study tested three hypotheses. The hypothesis that the CSWQ will contain three or more factors was supported. Results of the exploratory factor analysis showed that the CSWQ has six scales: Financial Security, Social Performance, Family Concerns, Academic Concerns, Personal Relationships, and Time Urgency. Also, the hypothesis that each scale will have satisfactory internal consistency was adequately supported. All of the CSWQ scales had high internal consistency as measured by corrected item-total scale correlations (.30 and above) and Cronbach's alpha indices (.70 and above). However, the final hypothesis that women will score higher than men on all the obtained total and factor scales was not supported. Women reported significantly more worry on only four of the six scales and the total CSWQ. Preliminary analyses examining correlations between the CSWQ and the other study measures were also conducted Both significant positive and negative correlations were found between the CSWQ and the other self-report measures included in the study. These preliminary results clearly provide data to support further research and use of the CSWQ in a college population.
