Abstract

"'Open Endings': A Proposed Theatre-in-Education Program Exploring Adolescent Suicide" is a descriptive study the purpose of which is to establish the theoretical basis for and the process of the development of a Theatre-in-Education program exploring the complex social issue of adolescent suicide. Chapter One introduces the study and presents a review of related literature in the two areas: adolescent suicide and Theatre-in-Education. Chapter Two establishes the theoretical base for the use of the specific dramatic form, Theatre-in-Education, for the exploration of the complex social, adolescent suicide. Four major theorists have been selected for this theoretical treatment: Richard Courtney, Robert J. Landy, Gavin Bolton, and John O'Toole. The contexts in which adolescent suicides occur is presented in Chapter Three through an examination of theories of current experts in the field. Books written specifically for adolescents exploring the issue of adolescent suicide have also been utilized for this portion of the study. The process of program development and the considerations regarding program implementation are presented in Chapter Four. Chapter Five contains the outlines specific to the development of and the eventual implementation of the Theatre-in-Education program, "Open Endings." This study concludes that the dramatic form of Theatre-in-Education offers its adolescent audience members an opportunity to explore this complex issue, and implies its [TIE's] consideration for further use in presenting delicate issues not usually covered in the school's curriculum.
