Abstract

I was in fifth grade when I heard the word "gifted" for the first time. I had little idea what it meant, but once I was identified that way, my life as a student began to change. I was suddenly expected to perform at my highest level with very little room for error. I learned about the expectations of my performance from my peers, teachers, and parents. They sent me very clear messages about how I was to perform as an academically talented woman. My experience has shaped my research interest for this thesis. In this thesis, I will explore the experiences of other academically talented women. First, I more thoroughly preview the topic. Then, I detail the theoretical framework that drove this study, Goffman's (1959) theory of self presentation, and review existing literature on related topics. Then, participants were interviewed both individually and as a group to discuss their experiences and the implications of their identity, and they were asked what it was like growing up with the expectations of being an academically talented woman. They will be asked to talk about their experiences growing up "gifted," and the expectations that were placed on them, not only by themselves, but by their parents, peers, and teachers. Finally, the results will be discussed in relation to the existing literature and research expectations, and suggestions for future research will be made.
