Abstract
Abi Coffer performed a Master of Music Flute Recital at six o'clock in the evening on Friday, February 24, 2012 in Davis Hall, Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Ms. Coffer opened the recital with a work from the Baroque era, the melancholy Fantasie no. 12 in g minor for solo flute by Georg Philipp Telemann. For the next piece, Ms. Coffer was joined by faculty pianist Polina Khatsko in a performance of a twentieth-century, three movement Sonata by Jindrich Feld. After a brief intermission, Ms. Coffer resumed the program with an Andalusian folk inspired piece by Cristobal Halffter for solo flute, entitled Debla. For the next selection, Dr. Khatsko joined Ms. Coffer in a performance of a light and spirited Sonata for Flute and Piano by Erwin Schulhoff. Providing a surprise end to the program, Ms. Coffer presented Ian Clarke and Simon Painter's rock influenced Tuberama with CD accompaniment, requiring extended techniques from the flutist. Through this collection of repertoire from the Baroque era to twentieth-century, Ms. Coffer displayed a thorough knowledge of contrasting styles, musical expression and technical virtuosity, all required for a Master's level recital. Georg Philipp Telemann - Fantasie no. 12 in g minor for solo flute Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), a prolific German composer of the Baroque era, was greatly admired by his contemporaries (including Handel and Bach).
