Abstract
Sarah June Coleman presented a graduate flute recital Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at six o'clock in the evening. This recital was performed in Davis Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa and was given in partial fulfillment of the requirements of a Master of Music degree with an emphasis in flute performance. Musicians assisting Ms. Coleman on the recital were pianist Serena Hou, flutist Hannah Leffler, violinists Anneliese Gentzsch and Laura Hebbeln, violist Alyssa Adamec, cellist Matt McClellan, and conductor Ashley Smith. The program opened with the four movement baroque Concerto in E minor for two Flutes, two Violins, Viola, and Basso Continua written by Georg Philipp Telemann. Grand Polonaise by Theobald Bohm provided a virtuosic romantic closure to the first half of the recital. After the intermission, the bold harmonies and complex rhythmic gestures of the twentieth century composer Martin Amlin's Sonata for Flute and Piano gave the second half a dramatic beginning. The recital concluded with the lyrical and tuneful Irish melodies of Hamilton Harty's In Ireland. From the light baroque styling of Georg Philipp Telemann to the provocative and intensely rhythmic music of Martin Amlin, the audience was treated to an evening of diverse styles from the flute repertoire.
