Abstract

Seed of Liatris aspera and Amorpha canescens were hand collected from the Mark Sand Prairie in Eastern Iowa during the fall of 1973 and 1974. There was no significant difference in the viability between one and two year old seed with both species. There was no significant difference in the total germination at 21 C for L. aspera and A. canescens. A. canescens required a significantly longer period of time for the two year old seed to germinate. The most rapid, regular and complete germination of L. aspera occurred at 21 and 27 c. significantly reduced at 16 and 32 c. Germination was It was concluded that optimal germination under laboratory conditions can be obtained at 21 and 27 c. The most rapid, regular and complete germination of A. canescens occurred at 32 c. There was no significant difference in the total number of seed germination between 16 and 37 c. Seed treated at 27 - 37 C germinated significantly more rapidly than those tested at 16 and 21 c. Seed of both species pre-treated at 5 and 10 C were exposed to 21 c. Total germination of this seed was significantly reduced after this cold treatment. Previous investigators have been stratifying this seed at 5 c since 1940 and obtained similar germination results to those given cold treatment in this study. It may be concluded that if seed of L. aspera and those of A. canescens were to be collected at maturity in the fall, air-dried and kept for spring seeding, a greater number of seed may germinate. 2 Surface sterilization with 5% Clorox on A. canescens inhibited microbial growth and had no significant effect on the germination of this seed at optimal temperatures. An attempt was made to germinate A. canescens in pod. Eight per cent germination was achieved at optimal temperature. The low germination was attributed to the inadequate method by which seed soundness was determined. However, 15% of the non-germinating pods contained some seeds.
