Abstract

The elements earth, water, fire, and air, are essential for continuing and sustaining life on Earth. They are both life-giving and destructive-bringers of fortune or ruin-in the natural world. Central to this program is an artist's ability to translate these elements into poetic metaphors of the human condition and emotion: burning passion, the fertile soil of the soul, the winds of fortune, and the deep waters of despair. The realization of compositional techniques used to exemplify the four elements and the character communicated by the music is the objective of this recital. This performance involves works from all principle style periods of music except the Romantic era, and all selections demonstrate the textual use of the elements either in their natural form, metaphorically, or both.
