Abstract

A coordination compound, or complex, is formed when an atom, molecule, or ion unites by donating a pair of electrons with another atom, molecule, or ion able to accept the pair. In metal .coordination compounds, a metal-ion is the electron pair acceptor and usually is able to accept more than one pair. The number of electron-pairs which can be used in bonding is called the coordination number. The donor atom, molecule, or ion is called a ligand.
