Abstract

Residence hall staff members, on each of the three levels, do not agree as to their positional roles. However, the higher the level of staff position, the more agreement there tends to be. For example, hall directors tended to agree on their positional roles more frequently than did the senior head residents. Likewise, the senior head residents tended to show more agreement on positional roles than did head residents. Students perceive the roles of the residence hall staff, on each level, as being primarily concerned with administrative and social areas. The staff showed a lower percentage of total response under "primary responsibility" for social and administrative items than did the students. On the whole, the staff tended to show a higher percentage of total response under "secondary responsibility" for social and administrative items than did students. This evidence would indicate that students tended to perceive social and administrative tasks as a primary responsibility of the residence ball staff, while the staff tended to see the same tasks as being more of a secondary responsibility. The start showed a higher percentage or total response under "primary responsibility" for educational items than did students. The students, on the other band, showed a higher percentage of total response under "secondary responsibility" tor the same items than did the residence ball directors and senior head residents. This information gives support to the idea that staff members perceive educational roles as being or more "primary" importance to the start position than do the students. The students showed a higher percentage of total response under "no responsibility" tor educational items than did start, thus indicating that students tend not to see the educational role of the staff member as being as important a part of the position as do the staff members.
