Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the extent to which college freshmen show an interest in those career opportunities which are available through an education in home economics and to ascertain the extent to which selected individuals and factors influence students' choices of career goals. A total of 342 freshmen students at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) participated in the survey by completing a career interest and influence questionnaire designed by the investigator. Results of the study indicated that students who expressed an interest in the career of "home economist" had significantly more interest in the selected home economics-related careers than the sample as a whole. However, 45% of the careers listed were of interest to over 25% of all of the respondents. There were no significant differences in the students' occupational aspirations (ideals) and expectations (actual goals). The UNI freshmen in the survey indicated that persons outside the educational community were significantly more influential in their career decisions than those individuals associated with academia. The exception was high school teachers; they were significantly more influential than non-academicians. Finally, there were significant differences in the extent of influence of selected career information sources. The students indicated that personal values and feelings are significant in these decisions.
